When to request positive material identification
PMI can strengthen alloy verification, but its scope and acceptance criteria must be defined before production.
Positive material identification can support verification of alloy chemistry at receiving, during production or before dispatch. The appropriate stage depends on the application risk and traceability plan.
Specify the sampling rate, method, report format and acceptance criteria in the RFQ. PMI complements, but does not replace, the governing material certificate and complete quality plan.
